We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Neil Guppy as the Acting Principal of UBC Vantage College. Dr. Guppy currently serves as the Senior Advisor to the Provosts on Academic Freedom and will continue this important work as he takes on this new interim role. He will serve as Acting Principal of the College for one year starting July 1, 2017 while Dr. Joanne Fox is on leave. Dr. Fox will return to her role as Principal of UBC Vantage College on July 1, 2018. We thank them both for their exceptional leadership and service to the University.
Dr. Guppy is a Professor in the Department of Sociology and has served as Department Head (Sociology), Associate Dean Students (Arts), Associate Vice-President Academic (Provost’s Office), and recently as Acting Managing Director of Student Development and Services (VP Students). He has been awarded both a Killam Faculty Research Prize and a Killam Teaching Prize. Dr. Guppy was instrumental in launching Imagine UBC and was the Director of the Co-ordinated Arts Program from 2007 to 2012. He brings to Vantage expertise and deep knowledge about building and sustaining enriched student experiences.
The Vantage One program offers a full 11-month first-year program in Arts, Science, Engineering, and Management. Vantage One students take first year UBC courses with embedded academic English and then transition well into the second year of their UBC degree programs.
