UBC Okanagan will welcome a new Dean in the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies this summer. UBC’s Board of Governors has approved the appointment of Dr. Bryce Traister as Dean for a five-year term beginning August 1.
Dr. Traister comes to UBC from the University of Western Ontario where he served as chair of the Department of English and Writing Studies from 2011 to 2016.
An accomplished scholar, Dr. Traister earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and a PhD in English from UC Berkeley. His research interests span a wide range of topics in cultural studies – from transnationalism and globalization to early American religious culture.
Dr. Traister is the former director of the Centre for American Studies in the Faculty of Social Science at the University of Western Ontario, and is currently president of the Canadian Association for American Studies and chair of the International Committee of the American Studies Association.
He has also served on numerous professional academic and administrative committees and boards, including service as president of the Canadian Association of Chairs of English (2014-2015), and on the executive board of the Association of Canadian College and University Teachers and Educators (2014-2016).
“We are delighted to welcome Professor Traister to UBC,” said Prof. Deborah Buszard, UBC Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the Okanagan campus. “His enthusiasm and experience are a great fit for our young and vibrant campus.”
Prof. Buszard expressed thanks to Dr. Robert Eggleston, who will continue to serve as Dean pro temp until the end of July.
