UBC’s Board of Governors has approved the reappointment of Prof. Gordon Binsted as Dean of the Faculty of Health and Social Development. Binsted will take a six-month administrative leave prior to taking up the reappointment from January 1, 2018, to June 30, 2022.
An active researcher in the field of sensorimotor neuroscience, Binsted served as acting Dean in 2011 and 2012, and was appointed Dean in June 2012. Over the past five years, Binsted also served as interim Dean of the Faculty of Education, and acting Vice-Principal, Research, at UBC Okanagan. Last year, 1,400 students were enrolled in programs offered by the Faculty of Health and Social Development’s School of Nursing, School of Social Work, and the School of Health and Exercise Sciences.
He holds a PhD from the University of Alberta, Master of Science degree in human biodynamics from McMaster University, and received his Bachelor of Human Kinetics degree from the University of British Columbia.
During Binsted’s tenure as Dean, he has overseen Faculty restructuring of programs in all three Schools to be sustainable and innovative. His leadership has supported significant increases in research intensity through internal supports, strategic hiring and external partnerships. The Faculty has partnered with business and community groups to improve research impact and relevance both locally and globally.
During Binsted’s leave, Dr. Edward Taylor will serve as acting Dean until December 31, 2017.
