Dr. Jennifer Love appointed as Senior Advisor on Women Faculty

A message from Angela Redish, Provost and Vice-President, Academic pro tem

I am pleased to advise that Dr. Jennifer Love has accepted the position of Senior Advisor on Women Faculty, commencing July 1, 2016. This position reports directly to the Provost and Vice-President Academic at the Vancouver Campus, and supports institutional efforts to enhance the scholarly and leadership environment and opportunities for women at the Vancouver campus.

Dr. Love will work closely with the deans, Human Resources, Faculty Relations, the Equity and Inclusion Office and other units around policies and practices that promote equity for women faculty, providing advice and serving as a resource to UBC’s academic leadership on matters of significance to women faculty.

A Professor in the Department of Chemistry (as of July 1, 2016) and expert in the use of transition metal complexes in homogenous catalysis, Dr. Love has a longstanding interest in and commitment to equity issues demonstrated through her mentoring of women in the Chemistry Department as well as, for example, through her role on the steering committee for the Srivastava Fund (a Faculty of Science endowment to support female graduate students and postdocs in science and technology) and by organizing a forum on ‘Women in Science’ at the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies.

Dr. Love has served in a number of administrative and leadership roles in the Department of Chemistry. At the university level, she was a member of the President’s Advisory Committee on Student Discipline and on the Faculty of Graduate Post-doctoral Studies Scholarship committee. Nationally and internationally, Dr. Love is the past-Chair of the Inorganic Division of the Society for Chemistry, where she collaborated in developing new research opportunities between Canada, the UK and the US. Since May last year, she has been an Associate Editor for Catalysis Science and Technology, and is serving on the organizing committee for the 12th International Conference on Heteroatom Chemistry that will take place at UBC in 2017.

Dr. Love is committed to developing evidence-based recommendations for positive change for women faculty at UBC, working with units to obtain the most recent survey results on working climate, and implementing recommended changes to promote equity.

I want to thank the advisory committee for their time and commitment to this search and for their valuable insight and counsel in assisting me with this appointment. I would also like to take this opportunity to once again thank Professor Rachel Kuske for the great work she did as the first Senior Advisor on Women Faculty, laying the groundwork for what, I’m sure, will continue to be a very important position for this institution. Please join me in congratulating and welcoming Jennifer to this role.
