UBC welcomes Jennifer Burns as the new Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the University. Starting her role on August 1, 2015, Jennifer will lead the overall information technology portfolio at UBC and leads the UBC Information Technology department’s efforts to maintain an advanced IT platform for teaching, research, and administrative services.
An experienced leader within higher education and with an extensive background in IT operations, client services and leadership, Jennifer maintains the strategic oversight of campus-wide IT services in a highly client-centric environment, promoting innovation and institutional value in support of the University’s mission. Robert Einarson appointed AVP Finance and Operations for UBC’s Okanagan campus

We are pleased to announce that UBC’s Board of Governors has approved the appointment of Robert Einarson as the Associate Vice-President Finance and Operations for UBC’s Okanagan campus. This position oversees a diverse portfolio and has joint UBC-wide responsibility for Payment and Procurement Services (including payroll).

Mr. Einarson brings considerable experience in university financial management, planning and business operations. He is currently Executive Director of Planning and Process Improvement at the University of Winnipeg, and previously served as Executive Director of Audit Services at the University of Winnipeg, and Audit Manager at the University of Manitoba.

The Associate Vice-President Finance and Operations provides leadership in financial and operational areas of the Okanagan campus, and is a key member of the University’s financial team.

James Tansey appointed Acting Executive Director for the UBC Sustainability Initiative

James Tansey has been appointed Acting Executive Director for the UBC Sustainability Initiative (USI). James brings strong institutional knowledge of USI and an deep background in sustainability to the role.    

James is an associate professor at the Sauder School of Business and is the Executive Director of the Sauder Centre for Social Innovation and Impact Investing (SauderS3i), a Research Centre at the Sauder School of Business dedicated to social innovation and sustainability. He has taught in MBA, EMBA, Executive Education, MSc and Undergraduate programs in the UK and Canada. He is the founder and CEO of Offsetters Climate Solutions, Canada’s largest carbon management company. Tansey received his PhD from the University of East Anglia in 1999.

Following the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, Tansey was selected as one of four international advisers working with the United Nations Environment Programme on the environmental strategy for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. Tansey has worked as an advisor and contributor to the World Economic Forum, the UK National Audit Office, Oxford Analytica, Cisco, ISIS Innovation (Oxford), Environment Canada and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency.

In 2010, Tansey was recognized as a Top 40 Under 40 by Business in Vancouver and was a Pacific finalist in the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year® 2010 Awards. In 2013 he was awarded a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for his contributions to the Province of British Columbia.

Dr. Joanne Fox appointed Principal and Academic Director, UBC Vantage College

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Joanne Fox has accepted an appointment as the Principal and Academic Director of UBC’s Vantage College for a two-year term starting July 1, 2015.   As many of you may already know, Dr. Fox has been the Acting Principal of Vantage College since February 2015. 

Dr. Fox has shown exemplary leadership in her role as Academic Director.  As Acting Principal, she has overseen the approval of two new streams of Vantage programming as well as recruiting of the incoming class, and construction of Orchard Commons. 

Dr. Fox has a PhD in Genetics and has taught at UBC since 2005 in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology.  Her exceptional teaching has been recognized with a UBC Killam Teaching Prize. She is also a highly regarded leader in interdisciplinary collaboration and initiatives that enrich student engagement, both critical elements of the UBC Vantage College program

Public Affairs Welcomes Associate Director, Leslie Dickson

Public Affairs is pleased to announce the hiring of Leslie Dickson as Associate Director. Leslie has 10 years of strategic communications, media relations and journalism experience. She comes to us from the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC), where she acted as a media spokesperson and liaised with government and other stakeholders to address corporate issues.

She is also adept at managing organizational change, having led the internal communications for ICBC’s business transformation plan. In this role, she provided counsel to senior leaders and contractors as the corporation modernized and streamlined systems for insurance claims and services. Prior to her work at ICBC, she was the communications manager of St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation and a reporter with the Black Press community newspaper chain.

Leslie will join us on July 6 and we look forward to showcasing her talents in our fast-paced environment – promoting UBC’s good news stories and providing issues management when the stories involve reputational risk.
